Something like a baby brother to Manufaktura, Monopolis is another red-brick factory complex transformed into a dining and cultural space.

With a tall red-brick chimney announcing its name in Art Deco lettering, Monopolis looks a little fancy. Similar to other developments like Manufaktura and OFF Piotrkowska, this is a former vodka factory complex, which was transported into a restaurant and culture destination in 2020. It has undeniably created a niche for itself, a little more upmarket than the competition.

Appropriately there is a vodka museum on the lower level. There’s also a state-of-the-art theatre and a number of restaurants, with plenty of outside dining, away from any traffic, including Trattoria Italiana. Additionally, you’ll find artworks dotted around, as well as some smart shops and an innovative playspace for children.

The only snag for tourists is the location. Stuck out on the eastern edge of the Łódź ring road, it probably isn’t worth a special journey and there is little of interest in the surrounding area for most non-locals. It may be worth the 15-minute walk, if you’re looking for a good meal after visiting the cinema museum and it is well served by public transport.

It remains to be seen whether Monopolis will thrive and what effect it may have on the district. All the same, the renovation is impressive and the site is particularly atmospheric after dark. It’s nice to eat away from the traffic and the bustle of equivalent developments in the city.

Monopolis is served by the Kopcińskiego – Piłsudskiego bus and tram stop. Use this official Łódź timetable to plan your journey. Once you arrive, it’s hard to miss the heavily-branded red-brick buildings.
