Not every factory space in Łódź has been transformed into a shopping destination. The Art Factory is a complex of creative venues and offices, with a few places to eat as part of the mix.

Art Factory

The Art Factory is a vibrant cultural hub housed within a revitalized 19th-century factory complex. Originally part of Karol Scheibler’s massive Księży Młyn industrial site, it was transformed into an art centre in 2014. The results are pretty stunning, with a post-industrial atrium within the main building – a contemporary transformation of the building’s original elements, with polished concrete alongside century-old cast iron pillars and expansive windows. It’s worth at least a quick visit if you’re in this part of the city.

Home to the Łódź Design Festival and an international photography festival, Chorea Theatre, and the Art_Inkubator – an organisation that supports creative projects through their earliest years, the space also includes conference rooms, exhibition halls, a theatre and concert hall, the NieWinni wine bar and a cafe. It’s quite a clever symbol of the post-industrial transformation of the city into a creative place.

The site is usually open into the evening so it’s worth turning up and seeing if there’s anything interesting going on. If not, it’s a nice place to have a look around and then sit outside with a drink. See the official Art Factory website for information.

The Art Factory is a 20-minute walk down the southern end of ul. Piotrkowska from the Unicorn Stable (the Piotrkowska Centrum tram stop). The Tymienieckiego – Sienkiewicza NŻ bus stop is right outside the gate to The Art Factory and the Piotrkowska – pl. Katedralny bus and tram stop is just around the corner.
