Łódź is quite literally a public art gallery, with well over 100 giant murals on the sides of buildings. Here are some of the many highlights, with information on how to find them all.
The Rubinstein mural
Part of the creative regeneration of Łódź has seen the city itself transformed into a canvas for urban artwork. In addition to the many sculptures, over 170 buildings have inventive and colourful large-scale murals. Polish artists such as Proembrion, M-City, and Etam can be seen alongside international names, such as Brazilian Eduardo Kobra – who painted the famous Rubinstein mural above in 2014. The newest works are by local artist Paulina Kwietniewska.

The Pewex mural
Some of the artworks pre-date the contemporary reinvention of Łódź. The Pewex mural dates back to the 1970s when the department store in this building was where you could buy western goods in exchange for US dollars. You can find this across the road from the Rubinstein mural on Henryka Sienkiewicza.

Łódź is very much a city for looking up and keeping your eyes open, as a mural can pull you off your route and into a sidestreet. Some works include neon that only comes into play after dark, and other installations are crafted from disparate and inventive materials. Joanna Rajkowska’s Rose Passage is of note here.

Birth of Day mural
Some of the works are hidden away and you’ll have to know to look for them. For example, the decorated courtyard by Wojciech Siudmak is entered via a gate at 4 Więckowskiego – look for the words “NARODZINY DNIA” (Birth of Day) above the passageway.
You can download a comprehensive street map with almost 170 locations and the Urbanforms site documents dozens of the murals, with photos and information about the artists.

In addition to the linked map above, we have listed some of the highlights to get you started. These are marked on the map below in orange with the icon of an artist palette.
Click on a marker and it will give you the name of the landmark, with a brief description and links for more information and directions. You can pan, scroll, and zoom around the map, or use the + or – buttons in the bottom left of the map to zoom in and out.
Click on the icon in the top left corner for an index of every location, sorted by category. Scroll down or use the map search (the magnifying glass icon) to find the place you want. Click the name of the place in the list. Its location pin will be highlighted on the map.
Each category is on a different layer, which can be switched on and off. So you can just see the Sightseeing pins, for example.
If you are using the map on your phone, open the Visit Łódź map and then search for the name of the place. The map will then zoom in on its location.
