Once a self-sufficient factory town, Księży Młyn has been renovated into a complex of handsome red-brick buildings, including pretty rows of terraced housing once lived in by workers.
Księży Młyn
Once the biggest factory complex in Łódź, Księży Młyn was built in the 19th century by Karol Scheibler, the richest industrialist in the city. In addition to the factory buildings, warehouses, and cotton mill, this was a self-sufficient company town with a school and fire station, a railway stop, and blocks of workers’ housing.

Whilst the industrial buildings have been renovated into loft apartments, the original workers’ housing blocks are one of the main reasons to visit. These neat, attractive terraced units remain fully pedestrianised and have leafy parkways running between the buildings. The area is quiet and peaceful, and has an excellent cafe and a handful of craft shops.
Księży Młyn
Scheibler’s own residence, the Herbst Palace Museum is a particular highlight of the area and a stark illustration of industrial capitalism in action. The workers live in identical and orderly dwellings in the shadow of the factory, whilst the owner can oversee the growth of his wealth from a lavish house adjacent.
Księży Młyn (pronounced something like “sher-zhay-mwin”) is worth exploring as there are various photographers studios and a couple of galleries, and it’s a good place to look for souvenirs. So give it a bit of time to reveal itself. Weekdays are best to visit as you’re more likely to get the place to yourself. Remember, though, it’s still a residential area, so be respectful of people’s privacy.
